The Lure Fishing Guide

Welcome to the Plugs & Spinners GUIDE TO LURE FISHING ! Choose your preferred type of fishing by clicking on either image below or scroll down for other articles.

When I started out fishing, it wasn't with lures. However, in my experience it doesn't take long before you feel the urge for something a little more exciting in your angling life...

So forget the expensive bait, 20ft rods and the long, tiresome hours spent waiting for a bait alarm to sound or a float to dive under - welcome to fishing with lures!

updates

Hi everyone,

I have made some adjustments to some of the information given on this site after some inaccuracies were highlighted to me by Keith Arthur of TalkSport's Fisherman's Blues programme.

Firstly, to clarify, UK coarse fish should not be removed from their waters. You can find the rules and regulations on the UK Environment Agency website.

The original text read '(river/lake fishing)...can provide you with some good sport if not your evening meal' What this meant was that it cannot provide you with a meal because the taking of fish is not allowed. The text in this section has been updated to clarify.

Also,

The section on setups has been updated with an emphasis on the knots used. I am informed that although the bloodknot can be used to tie mono to mono if the lines are of a similar diameter, this is not the most reliable method. The bloodknot should certainly not be used with braid either. Visit www.animatedknots.com/usesfishing.php for a great guide on knots.

Thanks for your input Keith.

Keith Arthur presents Fisherman's Blues on TalkSport radio station from 6am on Saturdays and Sundays. A great show that I can wholeheartedly recommend to any angler.

Fishing for Pike at King Sedgemoor Drain and Huntspill

Pike on lures at King Sedgemoor Drain & Huntspill River

Hi all, went out yesterday afternoon and this morning to try for some Pike on lures. Conditions far from ideal as the recent snow is melting, its cold and the rivers are flowing fast and coloured. The King sedgemoor drain became unfishable in the end due to the flow but I managed this little Jack pike on a mepps style spinner in bright perch colours before calling it a day. About 4 lbs.
Fished this morning at the Huntspill River in much the same conditions and the fish were not interested. My thanks to the owner of the tackle shop on the Bath road in Bridgewater - a real gent which makes a nice change. I shall be back!

TIPS: how to put new line on a spinning reel

TIPS: How to put new line on your reel

Hello everyone, I have decided to introduce some tips for novice anglers that won't fit in to the main guide. Today, how to spool new line on to the reel.

When filling a new reel with monofilament line you need to do it right or else you'll end up with loops and tangles that just won't cast properly. So here's how I do it.

My top 10 Bass lures

TOP 10 BASS LURES

There are lots of 'top 10' lists out there on the internet for lure fishing. Maybe you're looking to add to your collection or maybe just looking for some inspiration but here are the lures that I won't leave home without when heading to the coast to nail a nice bass or two. You'll have your own favourites too probably - its funny how quickly a lure can shoot up in your estimation after just a few catches. I have caught fish on all these lures. If you think I've missed something, why not comment? Whats your favorite plug or spinner?
